As a revolutionary video technology, live streaming has profoundly reshaped various markets, including healthcare. Medical live streaming has emerged as a new telemedicine channel, offering experiences distinct from traditional text- or voice-based consultation channels on online healthcare platforms. In this study, we seek to understand the impact of the medical live streaming channel on the demand for conventional online consultations. We analyze panel data from an online healthcare platform, leveraging variations in the timing of physicians’ adoption of live streaming. In particular, we employ the difference-in-differences identification with coarsened exact matching and additional analyses, such as Goodman-Bacon decomposition, lookahead matching, and instrumental variable (IV) estimation, to identify the causal relationship between the adoption of live streaming by physicians and their volume of online consultations. We find that the adoption leads to a positive spillover effect on online consultations, resulting in an approximate 44.5% increase in consultation volume. Moreover, our results suggest that it is the number of effective viewers (i.e., those watching beyond one minute in live sessions), rather than the accumulated number of viewers, that amplifies the spillover effects of medical live streaming. We also find that live streaming has stronger positive effects when physicians’ live-streaming rooms exhibit more interactive behavior. Furthermore, live streaming proves more beneficial for physicians who are affiliated with more reputed hospitals, those who charge lower consultation fees, and those who offer a broader range of consultation methods.
